National Identity Cards are offered by Biden Administration for Undocumented Immigrants

Undocumented immigrants don’t have the means to identify themselves in the US. The Biden administration proposed a new ID system called the ICE Secure Docket Card Program to address this problem. This national identification card system will allow migrants to legally identify themselves as they navigate their removal court proceedings or immigration cases. These IDs will be provided to migrants crossing the US-Mexico border and other immigrants who don’t have legal status temporary ID cards. You can get more information on this matter from an immigration firm in New York.

Why are these IDs necessary?

The national ID program for immigrants aims to reduce the immigration system’s bureaucratic burden. Historically, immigrants had to wait in a lengthy queue to physically check in at a government office or for court hearings throughout the immigration process. A national ID system should help streamline the system and improve efficiency. It also aims to enhance the communication between government officials, law enforcement officers, and undocumented immigrants.

More benefits for immigrants

The proposed national IDs should ease the daily life of undocumented immigrants in the US. Individuals without a legal way to identify themselves typically experience difficulties accessing housing and other essential services, such as transportation, state benefit programs, and healthcare.

With legal IDs, undocumented immigrants may be allowed to travel by plane within the country if accepted by the TSA. Currently, the Transportation Security Administration allows some forms of immigration documents as valid IDs for travel.

Details of the ICE Secure Docket Card Program are yet to be finalized, but the ID cards are expected to include the holder’s biographical information and photo. The ID will also have a QR code to access immigration documents and court information online.

So far, the Biden administration has provided $10 million for the pilot program as stated in the upcoming DHS (Department of Homeland Security) appropriation bill. Congressional approval is needed before the end of September 2023 to realize the proposed plan.
